Logistics Management

30 hours training    R 1300 per learner

The modules include the following:

  • Measuring And Controlling The Overall Costs Of Logistics Activities
  • Managing The Transport Function
  • Managing The Warehouse Function
  • Managing Inventory And The Purchasing Function
  • Managing Order Processing Function

The integration of these modules simplifies the managing of logistics operations.

Module 1: Managing Customer Satisfaction

Knowing your customer (and customer surplus), perceptions of value, components of customer service, elements of customer components, importance of service effectiveness and service performance control.

Module 2: Measuring And Controlling The Overall Costs Of Logistics Activities

The break-even analysis, time costs (influence of inflation, LIFO, FIFO and AVCO), total costs of ownership, cost of new projects and cost of capital and economic value added (EVA) in the supply chain.

Module 3: Managing The Transport Function

Operational characteristics of the various modes of freight transport, terminals, the goods carried I the transport system, freight transport service providers, the freight transport user, efficiency in transport, economics of scale, competition within modes of transport, cost structure of the different transport modes, cost trade-offs in transport, profit planning and control and tariff quoting.

Module 4: Managing The Warehouse Functions

Initial requirements in the design of storage and handling facilities, sizing the warehouse, how to achieve cost effective storage, planning for growth, operational and warehouse management systems (WMS), design process, fire-, security- and lighting planning, processes and operations, general errors in operations, stock management, efficiency in warehouses, bar-coding and scanning and the challenge of managing continuous change.

Module 5: Managing Inventory And The Purchasing Function

The reasons for holding inventory, impact of demand on inventory management, functional classification of inventories, measuring the effectiveness of inventory management, inventory carrying costs, the profit-leverage effect of inventory management and economic order quantity.

Module 6: Managing The Order Processing Function (Procurement)

Nature of procurement management, strategic role of procurement, the five procurement management tasks, activities that ensure an efficient logistics channel, nature of goods purchased, managing suppliers, activities ensuring an efficient logistics channel, methods to curb procurement costs and procurement cost management.

Applying this knowledge, the student should be able to:

  • Work effectively with others as a member of a team and organization to conduct, communicate and perceive logistical activities in an integrated and holistic manner.
  • Communicating information using different skills in the modes of persuasion with regards to determining logistical cost factors and communication with other role players within the logistics chain.

Demonstrating and understanding a business as a set of related systems by effectively and accurately analyzing logistical systems.
