As the saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and to say students are work ready is one thing, to prove that they are on par with theory another, but ultimately when they are placed in a real life situation is when the true test starts.
Annually Boland College hosts a competition among its final year (NCV Level 4 and N6) marketing students where they can compete for the title of Marketing Student of the Year. Each student must complete a marketing plan, advertisement and present this to a panel of judges who judge according to strict criteria. This year each student had to identify a non-profit organization in their area and the aim was to not only create awareness of the institution, but also as a fundraising mechanism.
NPOs included the SPCA, Bowey House (HIV/Aids Orphanage), CSA and NORSA (Norwegian, South African Partnership). Judges had a tough time on scoring the students as the entries were of a high standards. “What makes me excited is the level to which businesses support this initiative,” said Christiana Neal, Senior Manager, Assets and Procurement at Boland College who sourced prizes from service providers. Langverwacht Landscaping, Nashua, Tecworks, Pro-Plan, McDonalds and Barista sponsored prizes ranging from Livescribe pens and R5000 cash prizes to a Laptop.
Brian Phike, Deputy CEO: Education and Training at Boland College congratulated the students and organizers and made special notice how proud he is of the NCV Level 4 student who gave the N6 students a run for their money. Winners for the event was the team of Pieter van Zyl and Zaniel Scheepers (Paarl Campus) followed by JJ Kamanga (Strand Campus, NCV Level 4 student) and the third spot was taken by Johan Rossouw (Worcester Campus).
Inter-college judge Nolene de Costa (Northlink College) mentioned that she is excited about duplicating the competition and making it an inter-college competition showcasing the calibre of students colleges train to industry.
